so why do women live longer than men?
Evolution may play a role, researchers note in the journal Human Nature. But other factors also work in women's favor, and it's possible for anyone -- male or female -- to work toward a longer, healthier life.
First, take a look at the latest snapshot of U.S. life expectancy. In 2004, the most recent year for which such statistics are available, life expectancy from birth was 77.9 years. In 2004, life expectancy for U.S. women was 5.2 years longer than men.
Women don't just outlive men in the U.S. In April, researchers in England predicted that 2006 may be the year in which women outlive men all over the world, even in the world's poorest countries.
Vying for Attention
Here's the short version of the study, published in Human Nature: Male animals often have to
compete for female attention -- witness the male peacock's showy tail and the male moose's battle-ready antlers; vying against other suitors can be risky.
The University of Michigan's Daniel Kruger, PhD, and Randolph Nesse, MD, wrote the paper. They argue that men are much more likely than women to engage in risky and sometimes violent behavior, ultimately raising men's death rate.
More men than women die in car accidents, other types of accidents, homicides, and suicides, the researchers note. They add that in the U.S., the gender gap in death rates peaks in young adulthood and is mainly due to behavior.
Daredevil Appeal?
Kruger and Nesse took a big-picture look at how evolution may contribute to male-female death rates.
They don't claim that all men engage in risky behavior to impress women, or that all women look at daredevils and think, "I'd like him to father my children." They also don't dismiss women's health risks.
However, Kruger and Nesse note that men, particularly those experiencing uncertainty or deprivation, "may develop riskier life strategies, leading to higher mortality rates." Of course, many men may not act that way when facing uncertainty or harsh conditions.
The male-female gap in death rates may be a sign of male-male competition in a society, the researchers also suggest.
Safer Childbirth
"Up until very recently in human terms, life expectancy for men was greater than for women," Carol J. Hogue, PhD, MPH, tells WebMD.
Hogue is a professor of maternal and child health and of epidemiology at Emory University's Rollins School of Public Health.
"I'm not talking about elderly people and whether the next year they're going to be alive," she explains. "I'm talking about the average number of years lived for a baby born. That's life expectancy at birth." Kruger and Nesse's study tracked death rates, not life expectancy from birth.
Why did women overtake men in life expectancy? "The difference is maternal mortality," Hogue says. Maternal mortality includes women's deaths during or associated with childbirth.
Maternal mortality improved in the developed world in the early 20th century and followed suit in most of the developing world, "although there are still areas in the developing world that have very high rates of maternal mortality," Hogue says.
Risky Behavior
It's "certainly true," Hogue says, that "males are much more at risk of violent death and associated with taking risks." She says "that may be part of the explanation as to why life expectancy at birth is now better for women than men."
"The major killer in early life for women was maternal mortality, and that has been tamed considerably, whereas the major killer for men is violence and accidents, and that has not gone down as dramatically as childbirth deaths have gone down," Hogue says.
Women shouldn't take their longer life expectancy for granted. The 2004 gender gap in U.S. life expectancy was the smallest it's been since 1946. If women continue to adopt unhealthy habits like smoking, the gap may narrow further.
"Also, now that obesity is such a major player in life expectancy, I don't think we know what impact that's going to have," Hogue says. She adds that some scientists have theorized that women may have greater genetic protection against premature death.
Boosting Your Life Expectancy
Men and women can take steps toward a longer, healthier life.
"You can change your life expectancy if you start today exercising, eating right, reducing stress through one or another stress-reduction methods like meditation, avoiding risky behavior, wearing your seatbelt, not cutting people off in traffic," Hogue says.
"In other words, you have your own destiny in your own hands, up to a point," she says.
stress free in 7 steps
Here are seven simple steps for breathing your way out of stress:
1) Sit in a comfortable, not-too-soft chair that lets you keep your back straight and your feet flat on the floor.
2) Put your hands gently on your belly, right below your ribcage.
3) Ready to take a breath? Expand your belly, drawing breath in through your nose. When you do this right, you'll feel your hands move slightly.
4) Don't hold your breath. Open your mouth a little. Slowly let your belly contract, gently pushing your breath out your mouth.
5) Repeat this for a few minutes. Try not to think of anything in particular. If thoughts wander into your mind, let them wander back out. Don't try to push the stress out of your body -- just let it go.
6) Practice this for several minutes each day. Work up to about five or 10 minutes at a sitting.
7) Do this once a day. If something is stressing you out, do a few minutes of this deep breathing until you feel calm.
hope it helps. =)

new year resolutions - making it happen
So you ate, drank and spent too much over the Holidays. Now you are overweight, bloated, tired and broke, and you are promising yourself that you are going to change all that this year!
But somehow, it just doesnt work at all. wonder why?
There are two reasons why New Year Resolutions don't work;
1st we try and take on too much,
2nd we don't believe in ourselves.
In the world of resolutions, "Size does matter".
You can turn your resolutions into realities by starting small. As the saying goes, "the only way to eat an elephant is one bite at a time!"
At the start of each New Year we begin by looking at our life and deciding this is the year we are going to make real changes in weight, romance, smoking, drinking, career, money, getting in shape, organizing, cleaning and more.
Well, we never followed through in all the other years, so as good as our intentions and desires are our subconscious is not expecting our resolution to come true. We have conditioned ourselves to doubt our ability to change. This core lack of belief triggers a lack of commitment to action and the result is the same year after year: not pursuing our goals with consistent action.
Well you have said it before, "This year is the year I _______!" Sound familiar? You have said it and you have not done it, but there is a way to make your goals materialize.
Here is Coach Steele's abbreviated "Resolution Success System!"
Step One: Learn and use this Success System. One you learn the system you can apply the system over and over again with successin every area of your life. Concentrate on the system not the goal.
Step Two: "Pick one, and get it done" as a friend of mine is fond of saying. Make sure you are picking something that you really want to achieve. You can't lose weight, stop smoking, or get an education because someone else wants you to. If you really want something you will do what it takes.
Step Three: Reduce this goal to manageable pieces. Set goals that are what you believe you can achieve in one month. Remember size does count and focusing your energy on one goal to be accomplished in 30 days gives us something tangible. If you don't believe you can do it you won't be able to.
Step Four: First write this goal down and then brainstorm to find at least 20 different actions you can take right now to achieve it. Don't skip this step! Our tendency is to take shortcuts. Do not!
Step Five: Post your written goal and the 20 ways you can achieve it on the wall in a very visible place. If we don't affirm our goals we will not achieve them.
Step Six: Study your goal and 20 actions several times a day, and visualize yourself with the results. If you can't see it you can't achieve it. Link your 5 senses (sight, sound, smell, taste, and touch) to the goal. Make it come alive for you!
Step Seven: Act as if. Act as if you have already achieved your goal. Give yourself positive affirmations as if you have already achieved the goal. This is called telling the truth in advance.
Step Eight: Go to the posted goal everyday as often as you can, recite it out loud, visualize the result, state the affirmation and then pick activities that you will do (from your list of 20) that day to achieve it. It is all about what you do each day so resolve to put the effort in. I call this the Law of Effort.
Step Nine: Apply the Law of Consistency; do not fall into the trap of tomorrow. Start now. Not tomorrow. Not January 1st. Then, commit to yourself that you will be consistent for 30 days. After all what is 30 days?
Step Ten: Update your goal, and repeat all these steps every 30 days and expand to every goal you want!
Be enthusiastic, as Emerson said, "Nothing great is ever created without nthusiasm."
These are the 10 parts of success that, if used, will guarantee your success.

Don't let this New Year end up like all the others, follow these steps and you will learn that you can develop a success system in your life.
Congratulations in advance for taking this first positive step in realizing your goals, and Happy New Year!

10 millionth visitor gets the best treatment
The lucky visitor was a 36 years old Sanjeev Bhandari who arrived with his wife and two children to celebrate Christmas in the city. They were warmly received at Changi Airport’s Terminal 2 Arrival Hall by Singapore Tourism Board’s (STB) Deputy Chief Executive (International), Quek Swee Kuan, and an entourage of performers showcasing Singapore’s unique blend of the modern world and rich cultures.
They were also welcomed with prizes worth over S$50,000 Business Class air tickets from Singapore Airlines, complimentary stays at The Shangri—La Singapore, The Amara Sanctuary Resort, and a luxury cruise onboard the SuperStar Gemini, as well as shopping vouchers and personalised guided tours. At the end of his stay, Mr Bhandari and his family will leave Singapore in style through the exclusive JetQuay Terminal.
talk about a million dollar treatment.
the lucky man Mr Bhandari said: "Till now I have heard a lot about Singapore from all of my friends and colleagues (but) I never got a chance to come. But this time even my kids were saying let’s go outside the country — when I thought of anything the first thing that came to my mind was Singapore."
STB said this year’s achievement of 10 million visitors surpasses last year’s record of 9.7 million.
The upward trend started since 2004 when Singapore crossed the eight million mark. STB added that Singapore is on track to achieve its 2007 tourism receipts target of S$13.6 billion.
This means that the Republic should be able to achieve its Tourism 2015 targets. These include increasing tourism receipts to S$30 billion, welcoming 17 million tourist arrivals and creating jobs for 250,000 people.
talk about huge number of people and huge huge money come in for singapore.
This year, Singapore was ranked as Asia’s top country and city for meetings. And according to the Union of International Associations, it is also among the world’s top three cities for meeting.
Moreover, Singapore is among the top five countries in the world for nightlife, fine dining and shopping. It has also been chosen as the top city in Asia that people would want to live in, according to this year’s Country Brand Index by FutureBrand.
and still many of us wont wanna stay here and flee to aussie.
singapore seems to have a great prospect with lots of people worldwide.
here's news for all.
